Abstract

The introductory chapter outlines the goals, objectives and structure of the atlas and is the only one to provide basic information in text form. It describes the spatial data operating procedure for the preparation of the atlas and gives an overview of the maps used to create spatial data.

Maps created for the censes in the first half of the twentieth century were either not published or were not preserved. Thus the maps for this period did not correspond to the structure of districts in the published census data and they have been adjusted to allow the constituent time profiles of censes to be mapped.

This was easier for the years since 1961 and for the latest three censes the boundaries and other attributes are available digitally in GIS.
