Abstract

Three map sheets evaluate in detail the development of mortality and life expectancy. The first map sheet shows changes in standardized mortality, age specific death rates for three age groups, a signifi cant decrease in infant mortality and mortality within the first year of life and on the other hand a growth of life expectancy.

The following two map sheets are dedicated to causes of death. Six groups of death's causes were selected according to significant changes undergone in the twentieth century, particularly under the influence of social and economic development, progress in medicine and changes in life style, generally termed the epidemiologic transition.

Data are adjusted to correspond with the ninth revision of the International Statistical Classifi cation of Diseases and Related Health Problems.
