From fiction to reality

Abstract

The case study of an educational situation in social studies taught in the first grade was elaborated by the AAA method. The analyzed situation bypasses the concept layer: the pupils remained at the thematic layer level, the task was not used to construct the knowledge related to the core concept of the lesson.

The pupils formulated their preconceptions but they did not have the opportunity to use them to understand the concept that was presented. The teacher did not build the thematic and conceptual context thoughtfully.

Pupil's preconceptions were not confronted with reality, they remained at the level of fiction, which is in contradiction with the objectives of socio-human education. However, the pupils were motivated enough to work with the offered content, therefore the observed educational situation can be evaluated as one of the examples of didactic formalism - hidden learning.

The paper proposes an alteration to exploit the potential of the educational task and offers possibilities of a sophisticated selection of the subject matter and how to draw it up in the field of socio-human education at a primary school through the agency of the so-called big ideas and cultural universals.
