Foreign Home - Austrian Officials in Bosnia and Herzegovina during the second half of the 19th century
Abstract
Bosnia and Herzegovina was in the 19th century on the border of influence of the Ottoman Empire and the Austrian Monarchy. After four whole centuries under the Ottoman rule the Bosnian population revolted.
This resulted in the Berlin Congress, where in 1878 it was decided that Austria-Hungary would acquire a mandate for occupation of Bosnia. Bosnia remained under Austrian rule for the rest of the 19th century.
Since then Austria-Hungary has been continuously trying to culturally influence Bosnia. An essential role in this process was played by Austrian officials who were sent to Bosnia to look after the country's administration.
The lifestyle of these officials, whose activities have been repeatedly discussed by the so-called Austrian delegations, and their influence on developments in Bosnia will be the main focus of this project.
