Abstract

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are one of the most frequent diseases in the contemporary population. Annually, CVD are responsible for 17,5 million deaths.

In the Czech Republic, a continuous decline in the relative number of deaths caused by CVD has been observed. Despite that fact, this country is recognized as the seventh one in Europe with the highest number of deaths from CVD.

The prevalence of CVD in the Czech Republic is approximately 40 %. Patients with cardiovascular diseases represent hig-risk patients in dentistry, therefore special requirements in dental care are necessary.

This article reviews the basic characteristics of each type of CVD influencing dental medicine. The elementary recommendation for dentists dealing with patients with CVD are mentioned.
