Abstract
A monograph on the problem of sign language and gesture in the history of Western philosophy. The author looks for historical origin of two paradigms of conceiving deafness: deafness as deficiancy and deafness as difference.
In relation to this central topic, he also presents a chapter on the origins of language (Condillac, Rousseau) and on the relationship between language and gesture (Merleau-Ponty).
