Abstract

Gunshot wounds are generally characterised by the permanent cavity which can be defined as the bullets wound track and is observed as a hole or damaged area in tissue formed after projectile penetration. The data obtained are used to assess the risk through the so-called gunshot wounding criteria.

There are a number of different injury severity scoring systems in use by the medical fraternity to triage patients with gunshot wounds and other trauma. These systems rely on assessment of actual injuries rather than the type of bullet creating the wound/s.
