This paper examines one of the crucial moments in the history of Englqand during the absence of King Richard, when William Longchamp, royal chancelor and supreme justiciar was deposed on the grounds of power abuse. Malcontents were led by king's brother John of Mortain.

Paper is focused on the image of these events, created by three contemporary chroniclers, Ralph de Diceto, Roger of Howden and Richard of Devizes.
