In the article devoted to the 70th anniversary of the birth of Charles IV, the Czech King and Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, the author notes his relation to the Czech language and Czech culture. He focuses not only on his own literary activities, but also on his support of translation activities, the creation of period dictionaries and the literature created in the Emmaus Monastery in Prague.
Special attention is paid to the Golden Bull of Charles IV. of 1356, Article XXXI. establishes Czech, together with German and Italian, the official language of the Holy Roman Empire, and instructs the secular electors to let their sons learn Czech and Italian.
