Pseudo-Plutarch's On Music

Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2015

Abstract

The dialogue On Music, which is ascribed to Plutarch of Chaeronea by the manuscript tradition, is usually the first ancient text on music to be translated into a modern language. That is also the case of the parallel translation in this book that, for the benefit of the reader, was provided with detailed musicological and cultural annotations.

The text and annotations are preceded by an essay which presents information on the authorship of the treatise, on its dating, genre, structure, historical and literary value etc. As far as the terminology is concerned, it should be stressed that the general tendency is to follow M.

K. Černý, who was the first to publish a treatise on ancient Greek music in the Czech Republic (Hudba antických kultur, Olomouc 1995; Praha 2006).
