The paper focuses on three areas of influence of the EU law in connection with the nationality of the Czech Republic. First, the author analyses indirect impact of the EU law on the acquisition and loss of the Czech nationality under the Act No. 186/2013 Coll., on the nationality of the Czech Republic.
Second, prohibition of discrimination based on nationality is the key principle of the EU law which concerns all areas regulated by the Union law. As a result, the status of EU citizens in the Czech Republic is similar to the status of Czech nationals which reduces the significance of the nationality.
Moreover, the citizenship of the Union has been introduced, bringing new rights (including political rights) to the EU citizens although these were initially reserved in favour of the nationals. Third, there is a phenomenon of so called reverse discrimination.
In certain situations, the nationals have even less favourable status than EU citizens.
