The Biblical Pre-history of sola scriptura

Publication at Protestant Theological Faculty |
2017

Abstract

"Sola scriptura. The meaning of Luther's principle." The article elucidates the principle sola scriptura that defined the Scriptures as the norm of Christian teaching and life.

The author investigates the role of the Law and the Prophets in Jesus and in the Early Church and then he describes the origins of the Gospels which together with the Pauline letters became the core of the "New Testament" - the second part of the Christian Bible, the first one being the Jewish Bible, which in this context became the "Old Testament". The author describes the theological foundation of this Christian set of liturgical texts and concentrates his attention on the genesis of the New Testament.

Underlying the entire process is the intention to point towards God as the living authority over Scripture. But for this testimony Scripture is indispensable.
