Modern Trends in the Seismic Safety of Nuclear Power Plants

Publication at Faculty of Mathematics and Physics |
2017

Abstract

Seismic hazard is one of the limiting factors for the development of nuclear energy. Dangers posed by large earthquakes and subsequent effects are clearly demonstrated in the accident of the Japanese power plant Fukushima Daiichi.

The article focuses on new trends of seismic hazard mitigation and advanced seismic systems ensuring the safety of nuclear power plants. For seismic monitoring around nuclear power plants, special seismographs are being developed.

This is also supported by Czech scientists who develop new seismic sensor Rotafon, which is able to register a total of six components of seismic ground motion.
