In recent years, an increasing incidence of turmors of head and neck region that are not associated with a history of smoking and alcohol was captured. These tumors are almost regularly caused by an infection of high risk human papillomavirus (HPV) and affect mostly the tonsils and the base of the tongue.
Compared to tobacco-related cancers they differ markedly in biologic behaviour and carry better prognosis. Although a strong prognostic factor, HPV status is still not a predictive factor for the selection of treatment modality, but there are many ongoing studies for either HPV-postitive or HPV negative oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma.
