Abstract

Veteran trees are an aesthetic natural monuments and witnesses of landscape history as well as an environment for several endangered species. Selected trees are protected by law in the category "Památný strom" (Nr. 114/1992 Sb.).

The following list of veteran trees in the northern part of the Třeboňsko Protected Landscape Area contains 160 trees including their geographical position, measured trunk girth usually at hight 130 cm from the ground, basic description of each tree and selected photos. Even though all trees protected as "Památný strom" are included, the core of the following list contains documentation of other trees with dimensions comparable to trees protected in other parts of the Czech Republic.

The field research performed since 2004 confirmed that the region is one of the richest in the Czech Republic as regards the number of old veteran trees - one hundred trees of over 4.5 m in girth with 15 largest oak trees reaching around 6 m or more. The largest oak tree in the south Bohemia with trunk girth 8.5 m is also located in the study area.

Aims of this study are: (1) to provide data about the trees (for unprotected trees unpublished until now) and therefore allow comparison of tree dimensions with those from other regions (2) to establish a basis for more effective protection of the trees (3) to record characteristics of the trees using comparable methods and to enable future investigation of possible temporal changes and hopefully also to provide some assessment of the trees' age and future perspectives.
