VISUALIZATION OF LARGE-SCALE FLOW DUE TO AN OSCILLATING TUNING FORK IN NORMAL AND SUPERFLUID HELIUM

Abstract

Liquid He-4 has two phases: above the superfluid transition it is a classical low-viscosity fluid (He I), while below about 2.17K it is superfluid (He II), exhibiting the two-fluid behaviour. Using the particle tracking velocimetry technique, we present visualization of large-scale flow structures occurring in the surrounding bulk liquid due to a fast oscillating quartz tuning fork, in both He I and He II, and discuss their similarities and differences.
