Saint Procopius of Sázava between a Reality and a Fiction

Abstract

The study presents the new reconstruction the legend of St Procopius who was the founding abbot of the Benedictine monastery of Sázava. He has been on of the most populár Bohemian saints because in early medieval Bohemia his monastery was least where the liturgy was celebrated in the Old Slavonic language.

The actually in historiography exist only two main version of this legend. The article presents the new filiation of Procopius'legend and reexams his biography.

The main aim of this study is examination how historical figure of St. Procopius was presented in sourses form 11th to 14th centuries as Exordium Zazavensis, Vita minor and Vita antiqua.

The study focuses on the problem with papal canonization of St. Procopius and exams reasons why it was difficult.
