Abstract

The paper concentrates on the relation of Czech literary critic Václav Černý to Lidové noviny in the 1930s. Between 1936-1938 he used to present his views and judgements as a chief of Lidové noviny's critic section Literární pondělí ("Literary Monday").

It was not only works of literary criticism he published there - but also notices on events in both Czech and foreign culture (exhibitions, upcoming book releases), he commented on literary and social events, commemorated forgotten poets through brief profiles. In the paper we analyze Václav Černý's writing and rhetoric and we summarize the topics of his texts.

Except that, we show how Černý depicted this period in his memoirs - especially in the first volume of his three-part autobiography Paměti that covers the years 1921-1938, where he portrayed his co-workers in Lidové noviny (Karel Čapek, Josef Čapek, Karel Poláček, Eduard Bass, Arne Novák) - and we focus on the way of Černý's recollection and his self-presentation.
