Pars Plicata vitrectomy in premature newborns for retinal detachment as a result of retinopathy of prematurity, our results
Abstract
The aim of this work is to evaluate our own results of surgical solution of retinal detachment due to retinopathy in neonatal newborns. This is a potentially blinding illness that arises from the incomplete development of the bloodstream of the neuroretina in preterm infants.
The most effective therapy is currently ablation of the vascular retina by laser photocoagulation or cryocoagulation. In spite of this treatment, it is possible to develop the detachment of the immature retina.
We report casuistic results of retrospective 4-eye monitoring in 2 patients with severe ocular and overall complications of prematurity. The retinal detachment surgery technique was a 3-port 25-G PPV (pars-plicata vitrectomy) with 1.5 mm port intrusion.
PPV was performed using the Constellation (ALCON) operating unit. All retrieved eyes had attachment of the retina, as described in the individual case reports.
The current possibilities of vitreoretinal surgery allow the anatomical success of the retinal traction surgery in the ROP already in the neonatal age.
