Abstract

Diabetic retinopathy is the most common miscovascular diabetic complication and along with diabetic macular oedema it is the most common cause for loss of eyesight in economically active population in industrialized countries. Other eye-related diabetic complications include diabetic cataracts, diabetic neovascular glaucoma, neurotrophic keratopathy and increased incidence of dry eye syndrome.

Hyperglycaemia is the main risk factor. For all diabetic ocular complications, adequate compensation of diabetes is essential, along with mitigating other main risk factors - hypertension and dyslipidaemia.

Further treatment depends on the specific ocular complications.
