Lídia Jorge's novel The Wind Whistling in the Cranes was published in 2002. In her novel, the author depicts three generations of the Mata family - a family of immigrants from Cape Verde permanently settled in Portugal.

They are juxtaposed against the traditional, patriarchal, conservative and, first of all, "white" Leandro family. The analysis of two marginalized protagonists, members of the two families, and their relationship towards a limited living space creates the image of Portugal at the close of the 20th century
