Sir Ludwig Guttmann 's life and work - Hope for people after spinal cord injury

Abstract

The paper deals with the contribution of Sir Ludwig Guttmann (1899-1980) in the area promoting interdisciplinary care for patients with spinal cord injuries that predisposes not only the success of the treatment, but also the possibility of returning these individuals back to everyday life. The paper builds on Guttmann's innovative and humanistic ideas to enrich the lives of people with disabilities through sporting activities.

Authors report on the Stoke Mandeville spinal unit and its development until today. The goal of the article is to acquaint with the personality of this exceptional person, with his life and his destiny, and to describe the special-pedagogical overlap of his main ideas and works.
