Abstract

Education for the sustainable development is mostly seen by international and national policies as an essential tool for achieving sustainability goals. This is why scholars and other educational experts focus on this topic.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) developed by the UN and adopted by world leaders in 2015 call now for actions by all countries to be achieved. These Goals define among others the necessity to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to promote sustainable development and the new approaches in formal education enabling to acquire appropriate knowledge and skills by students.

The paper deals with sustainable development indicators that might be used as a didactic tool for enhancing knowledge and understanding of sustainable development. We present the indicators relevant for science education, and chemistry in particular.
