USING CALCULATION IN THE BIOLOGICAL TASKS

Publication

Abstract

Science competencies require the ability to compute some variables and to work with measured values, tables and charts. According to PISA 2015 Czech pupils lag behind in these skills of natural literacy.

However, all research tools verifying the level of natural literacy include primarily test tasks. Therefore, it is advisable to pay attention to extent science competencies which are developed in the context of the natural sciences tasks.

This study focuses especially on the biological tasks in worksheets. The research examined 48 publications from six different Czech publishers - Fraus, Fortuna, Nová škola, Prodos and Taktik.

The number of tasks requiring numerical calculations and quantitative reasoning was determined in the individual worksheets. Next part of research mapped the type of these tasks.

The categorization for the type of tasks was based on three basic bearers of numerical information - text, table and diagram. The analysis has shown that the number of tasks involving numerical computations and quantitative thinking occurs in a low frequency in the worksheets with biology tasks.

They do not exceed 4 % in total in many cases. However, it turned out that the type of these tasks is quite diverse and can be categorized into several groups.

The categorization of the tasks can be used as a research tool for further utilization and evaluation of worksheets not only in biology but also in other science subjects such as chemistry and physics.
