Translation as a language skill

Abstract

With the bilingual reform in full swing, the benefits that language learners may derive from translation and its multiple forms - including interpreting - have been widely discussed. The systematic use of translation and interpreting activities is conducive to creating a positive learning environment, improving individual language skills as well as developing a basic translation competence - known as the fifth skill - that can be put to practical use in employment and personal life.

Before translation can be established as a fully-fledged, effective component of language teaching, a number of problems have to be overcome; close collaboration between language pedagogy and translation studies is therefore highly desirable.
