If the Devil Can't Get You Any Other Way, He Sends a Woman. Old woman in the traditional worldview

Abstract

The author explores an aspect of the view of a woman: the aged-based stereotype. An old woman is connected with mostly negative stereotypes (compared to woman-maid or woman-mother), often derived from the changes of female body in old age and from the loss of a productive capability.

In folklore texts, an old woman is depicted next to the devil/demon, portrayed as a witch or wicked gossiping person. However, there is also a positive stereotype of an old woman in Czech as a wise, experienced and helpful person.
