Abstract

In principle, most earth structures in the civil engineering are made from unsaturated soils. This needs to be taken into account in analyses.

In the paper, the stiffness of unsaturated silty clay is studied in the double-walled triaxial apparatus mounted with HAEV disk, using axis translation technique. The stiffness was measured by bender elements and LVDT transducers.

The effects of suction magnitude, current suction ratio and suction history on the very-small and small strain moduli are studied. The laboratory data are used in calibrating a hypoplastic constitutive model.
