Abstract

Stencil painting, although it was one of the most widely used decorative techniques in the Middle Ages, has so far been almost out of the focus of the professional public. The exception is the research by T.

Edel, who viewed this Central European phenomenon coherently, without limitations of the individual frontiers. His findings are further developed by the lecturer in her dissertation and grant projects. The introduction of the conference contribution will familiarize the audience with the technique of stencil painting and with the questions related to its workshop realization.

It also deals with the specifics of the use of stencil painting for decorating of sacral interiors, especially flat wooden ceilings and furniture, where stencil painting served as a visual imitation of more demanding and therefore more expensive flat carvings. The preserved examples from the Czech Republic, the Slovak Republic and Poland prove that the range of motifs used for stencil painting has gradually developed into a distinct, rich form, and in many cases it is possible to talk about the iconographic program.

In conclusion will be presented possible directions for future research.
