Macbeth's Journey Between Media and Cultures

Publication at Faculty of Arts |

Abstract

Starting from the research of film adaptation as intersemic translation in the context of translation studies, the paper examines the transfer of Shakespeare's Macbeth into culturally specific, non European contexts. Emphasis is placed on the Japanese film Throne of Blood by Akira Kurosawa (1957).

Processes that can be observed based on one source and several target texts are not only related to the translation of a literary work into its audio-visual form but also to the overcoming of an intercultural boundary, for which usual translating or adaptation perspectives are often insufficient.
