Abstract

The study is based on the analysis of a unique set of personal correspondence by Eleonora Mendlova, the daughter of a significant Czech historian of economic history, Bedrich Mendel. The author follows in the first place the educational strategy of the family at the time of the First Czechoslovak Republic, showing the important role of foreign languages in the education.

The significant attention is then concentrated on the residence of E. Mendlova at the French secondary school in Saint-Germain-en-Laye under the so-called Czechoslovak section.

A biographical approach reveals that a "first-republic" education of E. Mendlova could not apply - even due to the radical socio-political breaks of the late 1930s and 1940s - in her life .
