Doubtful knowledge : Crimson Peak and the actualization of science in the Gothic genre

Abstract

A phonograph recording the story of a murdered wife and other types of modern technology in Guillermo del Toro's Crimson Peak (2015) seem to be just a slightly interesting feature in the traditional Gothic story. They can be perceived as an effort to "update" the clichés and surprise the viewer with unexpectedly modern inventory of a haunted house.

However, their interconnection with the Gothic genre is more basic and complex than might be apparent at first glance. The article maps this interconnection from the literature of the nineteenth century to the contemporary cinema.
