Abstract

This manuscript presents written communication of people with hearing impairment, especially of those who are deaf. Written communication of this population has changed dramatically over the last 25 years.

Twenty-five years ago, there was a crucial change in special education: collaboration among the fields of education of deaf people and linguistics. This collaboration was a result of societal changes, introduction of new trends in special education, and expansion of interdisciplinary collaboration.

This collaboration brought new perspectives and essential changes. The authors present findings of research studies focused on written communication of deaf people in Czech language, and changes in standing of written communication of deaf people in education of this population in the Czech Republic.

Current legislation in this area is also discussed.
