Abstract
The publication is divided into some parts which concern different aspects of the phenomenon of light (darkness, twilight) in the fine arts between the Enlightenment era and the time around 1900. It discusses selected examples taken from the painting mainly.
The scope of examples reaches from use of the phenomenon as an own tool of artists to the visual metaphor of broader cultural discourses.
