Abstract
The article proposes a new interpretation of the relationship of Quetzalcoatl to human sacrifice. While older interpretation mostly see Quetzalcoatl's story as a failure to install a fairer, more human régime in mythical Tollan, here the myth is read essentially as a warning of a catastrophe that would ensue should core duties of Aztec kings be neglected.
In this view, a refusal to sacrifice people would, in Aztec view, lead to gods' wrath and a harsh punishment of the king. Moreover, in this process Quetzalcoatl himself is revealed as weak, indulgent and easily induced to transgress his sacred duties.
In this sense, the myth describes a just pusnihment of Quetzalcoatl's hubris.
