Abstract

The knowledge of a number density of neutral reactants is crucial for evaluation of reaction rate coefficients of ion-molecular reactions. Uncertainty of determination of the number density represents a major part in systematic uncertainty of measurements by a 22-pole radiofrequency ion trap.

We have measured a number density of H2 in the trap as a function of temperature. A beam of Ar+ passed through the trap and reacted with H2.

The product ArH+ was monitored. Owing to the knowledge of the cross section of reactants we could determine the number density of H2.
