Representing the Scattering Continuum by Square Integrable Basis

Abstract

The ability of a square integrable basis to represent scattering continuum is investigated. Two Gaussian, one B-spline and one hybrid Gaussian - B-spline basis are constructed as a minimal basis set meeting specic requirements.

Scattering phase shifts and decay widths are evaluated for a short range potential using the proposed bases. Both quantities are found to be in good agreement with the exact values computed by the R-matrix method for all studied basis sets.

Considering other numerical properties the hybrid basis is assessed to be the most suitable one for practical use.
