The subject of the paper is a theoretic analysis of the relation between cultural studies and the phenomenon of multiculturalism. From the perspective of cultural studies the concept of multiculturalism includes two important dimensions.
The first aspect of multiculturalism is given by the fact that the post-colonial situation and vast labour migration resulted in societies that are characterized by cultural, racial and ethnic variety. The second aspect of multiculturalism relates to political efforts of the governments in countries with cultural diversity trying to achieve "equal possibilities" for members of different cultures who want to preserve their cultural identity living in the majority society.
Disputes over the multiculturalism doctrine seen from this perspective represent a big social, cultural and political issue of the currently changing modern Western civilization.
