The origin of a critical approach to the problems of practical philosophy can be seen in Plato's conception of dialectics. To illustrate this, the chapter concentrates on the usages of the proverb "doing one's own" (τὰ ἑαυτοῦ πράττειν) in the Republic which had belonged to the traditional morality but was, at the same time, current in the contemporary ethical-political debate.

The chapter focus primarily on the shifts in the meaning of the proverb, depending on the changing context within the course of the dialogue between Socrates and his interlocutors.
