The main purpose of chapter seven is to provide body mass estimations for all adult individuals buried in the cemetery of the 2nd church in Pohansko excavated between 2008 and 2012. We first review the general concepts of body mass estimation, including descriptions of previous body mass estimation techniques used in Pohansko and in other Central European Early Medieval period samples.
In the results section, we present body mass assessments that were estimated using a morphometric approach and population-specific femoral head equations derived for Central European Early Medieval samples. We also compare errors in body mass estimation between population-specific femoral head equations and more generalized techniques used on Central European Early Medieval skeletal collections.
Finally, we report our resulting body mass estimates, which are used in other assessments within this volume and in our summary of the skeletal inventory.
