Abstract
Hesychasm may be interpreted as a traditional Orthodox Christian spirituality and as a method to achieve the goal of Christian life, which is in the Orthodox Christian understanding - theosis - deification. From the earliest times we find the distinction between the creation of man in the image of God and in the likeness of God in the writings of some of the Church Fathers and writers.
Man was created in the image of God, but he had yet to attain his likeness, to become like God, to achieve full theosis. The true goal of hesychasm is to bring man to spiritual perfection, that he may by God's Grace become god.
