The Moravian sculptor Rudolf Hlavica (1897-1971) came to Prague in April 1926. He had enrolled to study at the General Arts and Crafts School which he attended between the years 1926 and 1929.
Then from 1929 until 1932 he studied at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague (UMPRUM), specialising in modelling and carving under the direction of Professor Štěpán Zálešák. With one brief exception Rudolf Hlavica never had permanent employment in Prague and dedicated himself solely to freelance work.
This was mainly sculptural work for the Resistance Monument on Vítkov and also on several portrait busts. Rudolf Hlavica ended his stay in Prague in July 1932 when he moved back to his native Moravia.
