Acoustic correlates of temporal structure in North-Vietnamese English

Abstract

Global temporal metrics of Southern British Standard have been calculated in numerous studies, and the results have always shown a clear tendency towards stress-timing. This study investigates the metrics for Vietnamese English and the Vietnamese language, which have not been produced by international research before.

Vietnamese scholars claim Vietnamese to be a syllable-timed language but they do not support their claim with empirical evidence. Seven metrics were used from the available choice and calculated for Vietnamese and Vietnamese English under three pruning conditions.

The results produced statistically significant difference that are discussed in the light of the current theories of speech rhythm.
