Jonas Šliūpas and his article about Jan Hus

2015

Abstract

The article about Czech medieval theologian Jan Hus was written by Jonas Šliūpas, one of the most important figures of the Lithuanian Revival. The article was published in the exile magazine "Laisvoji Mintis" in 1910.

It's content, structure and importance is not unusal. One can say that the article fits into the overall concept of "Laisvoji Mintis" magazine, which was primary based on the support and promotions of the Freethought movement among Lithuanian emigrants in America where Jonas Šliūpas was the leading personality of this liberal movement. Šliūpa's article "Jan Hus" is mostly copied from the monograph of the Russian philosopher Michail Filippov and for readers of "Laisvoji Mintis" it was mainly intended for general familiarization with the subject. Šliūpa's article strictly keeps to the original work, but deliberately conceals all Czech-Polish or Czech-Lithuanian connections, which were very abundant in the Hussite period.
