Subacute thyroiditis as a cause of thyroid storm. Case report

Abstract

The differential diagnosis of hyperthyroidism includes subacute thyroiditis, which is characterized by neck pain and elevation of inflammatory parameters. Thyrotoxic crisis caused by subacute thyroiditis with acute mechanic syndrome is described only in sporadic case reports.

We describe the case 73 year old man who presented himself with signs and symptoms of thyroid storm as a consequence of subacute thyroiditis. The patient was treated with propycil, metoprolol and hydrocortison, his condition stabilized and he was discharged from the hospital after 60 days.
