Foreign bodies in the lower respiratory tract in pediatric patients

Abstract

The problem of aspiration of foreign bodies occupies a significant part of the spectrum of diagnoses in pediatric otorhinolaryngology. It is always an acute or life-threatening situation, either immediately or as a result of possible complications.

It also depends on the volume and type of an aspirated material, the presence of bacteria, and the overall condition and immune competence of the child before aspiration. The most common aspirations are those in children up to 3 years of age, but other age categories are not the exception.

If this condition is suspected, the child must be thoroughly examined and the aspiration proven and then removed or otherwise an aspiration has to be excluded. We cooperate with pediatricians, radiologists and anesthetists in the approach to foreign bodies aspiration.
