The Perception of Migrants/Refugees in the Czech Republic and the Impact of the Migration Crisis on The Czech Political Scene

Publication at Faculty of Social Sciences |
2017

Abstract

The chapter deals with a significant phenomenon - the public perception of "foreigners" and "aliens", in the light of the European migration crisis of 2015, on the example of the Czech Republic. The issue of migration to the EU, especially from predominantly Muslim countries in the Middle East, Central and South Asia, and North and Subsaharan Africa, became, rather paradoxically, a source of concern especially in countries that were not the primary "destination" countries - such as the Czech Republic.

Gradually, migration became a part of the general political and social discourse in the country and it even became one of the main topics of the parliamentary elections in 2017, despite the fact that by the fall of 2017, the migration crisis was largely over.
