Allergic reaction to cefprozil as a beginning of multiple drug intolerance (MDIS)

Abstract

The multiple drug hypersensitivity syndrome (MDH) is a distinct clinical entity, due to drug allergies to two or more chemically different drugs, which are mainly antimicrobial and anticonvulsant. Recent studies place severe cutaneous adverse reactions, and particularly DRESS at high risk of inducing MDH.

Drug hypersensitivity reactions are highly specific and often restricted to a drug or drug class. MDH makes an exception, sensitizations for different unrelated drugs occur simultaneously, different from cross reactivity due to pharmacologic structural similarities.

Certain patiens display negative allergological tests and are considered to suffer from Multiple drug intolerance syndrom (MDIS). Such patient is reported in our case report.
