Abstract
This study analyses the interpretation of the Second Commandment, or Ex 20.4 in the Interpretation of the Ten Commandments and in the Proposition of Catechism by Zdeněk Trtík and in the Foundations of the Faith of the Church of Czechoslovakia, the official Catechism of the Church. The study primarily focuses on three key moments of Trtík's interpretation: a statement about depicting God or deities, an interpretation of the concepts of idol and idolatry, and the question of the possible consequences of Trtík's interpretation for religious practice.
To the extent necessary, the study also touches on Trtík's Christology, contained both in catechism and other works, and it also points to the context of the Second Commandment with other theological questions. The study follows the theological intent of Trtík's interpretation in connection with his biblical theology and dialogical personalism, while also pointing out some of the problems that Trtík's interpretation brings with it, and it tries to identify their causes and propose partial solutions.
In its entirety, the study is a possible impetus for the contemporary reflection of the Second Commandment and its relation to other theological questions and religious practices in the CČSH.
