Medical problems in the work of nursing staff in multiplace hyperbaric chambers

Abstract

In the course of therapy with hyperbaric oxygen in multiplace chambers, patients in various countries are accompanied by nursing staff. The nursing and medical activities in the hyperbaric chamber represent a thoroughly unique position in the complex differentiated medical care.

It brings about professional, organizational and operating problems and certain risks for the nursing staff, though. The authors summarize the problems in this area including experience of several centers, recommendations of various professional societies to minimize the risk of developing the decompression sickness in the personnel.

In general the work-related stay of the nursing staff inside the hyperbaric chamber is considered safe, although there is a certain risk factor. In conclusion, the authors outline the principles and legislation concerning health capability for work in increased atmospheric pressure as well as the assessment point of view for evaluating health damage related to work in increased pressure in relation to the new Civil Code and implementary regulations under preparation.
