Hepatoprotectives are substances which might have potential positive effect on liver cell regeneration and protection or to slowing down some pathological processes. Ursodeoxycholic acid possesses some positive effect in patients with primary biliary cirrhosis or other cholestatic diseases.
Out of the medicines of plant origin, silymarine can slow down the fibrotic process by antioxidant activity. Essential phospholipids can accelerate the reparation of cell membranes.
S-adenosyl methionine can interfere with metabolic processes supplying with essential metabolites. In general therapeutic outcomes of these substances are not supported by sufficient randomised placebo controlled clinical studies.
